I have been involved in the business world as an entrepreneur since 1976 but the area that will be of interest to you is the accounting and QuickBooks training in both the desktop and online versions. That combined period covers 27 years and counting.

My journey began in 1988 with a diploma from CompuCollege in software applications, which included accounting. That led me to Toronto to work with Computer Literacy Inc. as an Accpac Consultant for about two years.  What a learning experience that was, as I was involved with installations, setup, training, and tech support, serving small companies to large corporations.

While doing setups and training for the Accpac end-users I decided to start my journey in the accounting profession and entered the Ryerson Institute of Technology and also Seneca College to complete entry-level accounting courses. At that time I also setup my own consulting business, Micro-Talent Enterprises.

I decided to move back to my home in Vancouver and continued my accounting studies at Langara College there and worked in the accounting/consulting profession as Micro-Talent Enterprises.

During this period I became proficient in a number of accounting software packages including Bedford, which was purchased by Computer Associates and became Simply Accounting or “Simply” as it was known in those days – and has now changed to “Sage”.

For about ten years during the 1990’s I taught for the Vancouver School Board (VSB) Continuing Education Programs (Accounting Software), Concorde International College and Pitman Business College.

As I progressed I also learned other accounting software such as DacEasy, Vista (movie industry), and graduated to QuickBooks Pro which was very basic back in 2000.  Today QuickBooks Basic, Pro, Premier, and Enterprise Solutions packages command a premier position in the marketplace for small to medium sized accounting software.

Larry Johnson “The Trainer”

I quickly realized that by learning a myriad of accounting packages, I would become a jack of all trades and a master of none.  I decided QuickBooks would be my niche and I became a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I also continued my teaching of QuickBooks for Computer Consultants International (CCI) at various school board locations in the Lower Mainland including Burnaby and Coquitlam.

This accounting career has earned me various titles during my growth from Accounting Clerk and Bookkeeper, Internal Accountant, Accounting Manager, Production Accountant, to more senior titles such as Assistant Controller and finally Controller.

To further my education I went back to BCIT in 2007/08 to take the Taxation courses which are part of the CGA program. In September of 2011 I passed my exam to earn Intuit Canada’s recognition as a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor.

Recently – 2014, I passed my QuickBooks Online Certification to move into an area (Cloud based accounting) that will soon be the norm for all businesses.

As L.J. Accounting Services, I look forward to helping you with your questions and difficulties, while training you to grow in your knowledge of the QuickBooks Desktop and Online programs.
