An Update to the QuickBooks Error Code (-14111,0)

For those that are just entering into this article, I left you with a client’s problem in updating from QuickBooks Pro 2006 version to 2011. What had ocurred was a QuickBooks Error Code (-14111,0), in which none of the four to five technical support people could figure out. So I had to send the clients QuickBooks company file to QuickBooks Data Recovery.

There, a Recovery Specialist had to determine what was wrong with the file. There was of course specific criteria the company file would have to meet, or otherwise it would have cost the client to recover the data.

The problem turned out to be very simple and I was able to correct that problem, with the guidance of the QuickBooks Data Recovery Specialist, at no cost from QuickBooks (Intuit Canada). Here’s what had happened to create the problem.

If you look at the screen shot to your left you will recognize that this is the User List, which is found in the Menu Bar/Company/Set Up Users. Look closely at the line above Admin (logged on) and you will notice a black blanked out horizontal bar.

This black blanked out horizontal bar represented a User name that someone had started to set up, did not include a name or even a letter,  had not finished it, and saved it as is. So QuickBooks did not know what to make of it, how to update it, and when it came to rebuilding the company file, could not figure it out.

So it created this error code (-14111,0).

To fix this problem I just went into the client’s company file and deleted that blank userand then proceeded to update the company file to the QuickBooks Pro 2011.

I could not do that from the last working company file that had been used, or I should say, the file that last had been updated, to where the error had returned. This was the 2009 version.

So back I went to the 2006, and updated the company file systematically through the years 2007, 2009, 2010 to 2011. I did not have to go from 2007 to 2008, as there was no change in the structure of the software program. But in 2009, there were significant changes to the QuickBooks software design, and that is where I ran into the error code again.

After many hours and a frustrated client, I was able to solve the problem and  fix the data with the help of the QuickBooks Data Recovery Specialist.
